Common Cow-wheat is a short to medium, hairless or sometimes bristly annual with double lipped flowers, the upper lip hooded, pale to deep yellow in the axils of the lanceolate leaves.

Having a preference to acid soils it is more likely to be found in the west and the north or in the heathlands of the south of England. In flower from late spring to early autumn.
