Gorse is a familar plant throughout the country, forming thick, inpenetrable clumps with sharp spines. The flowers are a rich yellow type of peaflower, particularly evident from mid-spring to early summer. Found mainly on acid or neutral soils, on heath, moors, scrub, grassland and open woods.
