Travelling westwards from Reading, it now starts to get truly rural by the time Sulhamstead lock has been reached. A short distance further on is Sulhamstead swing bridge, one of a number of such bridges along this stretch of the canal.

The Sulhamstead Police Training College is close by to the south.
