There has been a toll bridge linking Whitchurch and Pangbourne since 1792. The original bridge, built of wood, was replaced by a second wooden one and this in turn was replaced by the present metal one in 1902.

The Toll House dates back to the original bridge in 1792 and from here the tools were collected until the building of the brick booth in more recent times.
