St Mary's church stands in the historic heart of Reading, giving its name to the nearby street, St Mary's Butts, in which in medieval times the townspeople of Reading were required to practice their archery.

In the foreground is the magnificent 150 year old Catalpa, Indian Bean tree. Sadly, increasingly poor health led to it being cut back in early 2007. Only part of the trunk now remains.
