| Living
in
a village situated high on the porous chalk hills of the Chilterns,
access to water had never been easy for the people of Stoke Row.
Until, that is, in 1864 the Maharajah of Benares bizarrely donated
the funds to sink a 300 foot well in the village for a water supply. It is a most unexpected structure to be found in an out of the way Oxfordshire village and attracts many visitors every year. On top of the winding gear can be seen a decorative elephant. Find the location on an interactive map. |
