The Almshouses in Ewelme date back to the 15th century when as a hospital they would accommodate 13 old men. By way of payment, each of these men was required to attend both Mass and Evensong every day at the adjoining church.

The rules have of course been relaxed since then and married couples have long been accepted as tenants. For a time, however, the wife had to move out on the death of her husband, although this rule was sometimes circumvented by allowing her to marry the incoming man! Such an arrangement is no longer necessary and a widow would be allowed to stay on, but even today no single ladies are allowed to move in.
