When Reading bridge was built in 1923, its centre span was longer than any other bridge of its kind. A fleet of heavy steam engines was used to test the strength of the bridge, a test that it came through without mishap (the consequences of failure doesn't bear thinking about!).

The Portland stone parapets are the home to a number of fossils.
