The working mill at Sonning closed down in 1969 after many centuries in use. The building was then re-opened 13 years later as a theatre/restaurant, attracting theatre-goers from as far away as London.

The waterwheel still survives in working order, and the Thames also powers a turbine to provide all the electricity requirements of the entire building.
