In 1999, the name of the quiet town centre walk beside the River Kennet was changed from "Chestnut Walk" to the "Oscar Wilde Memorial Walk" after the 19th century celebrity who languished for a couple of years behind the walls of Reading prison (seen here on the right).

The gate was erected at the same time, as also were railings bearing a quote from Wilde's poem, "The Ballad of Reading Gaol".
