The attractive riverside location of the Oracle shopping centre in Reading was made possible after a large brewery was relocated to a new site to the south of the town. The remainder of the site was mostly former industrial land and also used as a depot for Reading Buses.

The Oracle development was named after a 17th century building in nearby Minster Street, which originally served as a house for the poor to work as weavers.

Alongside both banks of the River Kennet is a 270 metre promenade, each lined with restaurants, cafés and bars. On the southern bank is a 10 screen cinema.

The river is spanned by two footbridges, Cooks bridge and Delphi bridge, the latter (and closest to the camera) being ellipse-shaped.
