The house in the centre is a private dwelling at the eastern end of Fry's Island, an island which also has a boat building and repair business and a bowling green.

The island's claim to fame is that it was the venue of a duel in 1163 between Robert de Montfort and Henry of Essex. Essex was wounded, but not mortally so, being nursed back to health at the nearby Reading Abbey.
