| The
house in the centre is a private dwelling at the eastern end
of Fry's Island, an island which also has a boat building and repair
business and a bowling green. The island's claim to fame is that it was the venue of a duel in 1163 between Robert de Montfort and Henry of Essex. Essex was wounded, but not mortally so, being nursed back to health at the nearby Reading Abbey. Find the location on an interactive map. |
